The UK will not be able to negotiate a future trade deal with the EU until after other issues have been finalised, including UK payments to the EU budget, German Chancellor Angela Merkel confirmed today.
Commenting, Chuka Umunna MP, Chair of Vote Leave Watch, said:
“The British people are under no illusions about the problems caused by Brexit, but the Government is still pretending that their rhetoric matches reality.
“Angela Merkel has been quite clear – that despite what the Government claim, we will not be able to negotiate our future trading relationship with the EU until all the other issues have been settled.
“Theresa May and David Davis have both promised to secure a trade deal with the EU that delivers the ‘exact same benefits’ as membership of the Single Market and Customs Union. Merkel’s comments show there simply will not be time to do so.
“The Government must wake up and recognise the damage their decision to leave the Single Market has the potential to do. And they must ensure that our economy is not driven off a cliff edge by pulling us out of the EU with no deal at all.”
